Almaty city tour

One day to take the city in whole: ride above it on a cable car, stand in the shade of a wooden cathedral, walk a market where people still haggle, and finish on a pedestrian street with a coffee.

What the route covers

Five stops that together give you a clear picture of the city: the view from above, the history, the food and the everyday life.

Cable car up Kok Tobe
Hill and cable car

Kok Tobe

The hill above the centre, with the TV tower and a viewing terrace. Go up by cable car — the ascent is half the experience.

Park and memorial

Panfilov Park

A shaded park in the very centre: tree-lined alleys, the Eternal Flame and the memorial to the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen the park is named after.

The Zenkov Ascension Cathedral in Panfilov Park
Wooden cathedral

Zenkov Cathedral

The late-19th-century Ascension Cathedral — built without a single nail and left standing by the earthquake that flattened most of the city.

Rows inside the Green Bazaar
Market

Green Bazaar

A working city market: horse meat and kazy, dried fruit from across Central Asia, Korean salads, mounds of spices. Tasting is encouraged and haggling is fair game.

Arbat pedestrian street
Pedestrian street

Arbat

The pedestrian stretch downtown, with street musicians, painters and cafés. A good place to end the route and simply sit for a while.

What the trip includes

We collect you from your hotel or any convenient address. The car stays with you for the whole route: no taxis to find between stops, and bags or purchases can be left aboard.

The order is flexible. If the bazaar deserves an extra hour and Arbat can go, that is what we do. On request we add lunch in the city and a drive up to Medeu, which fills the day.

The price covers the vehicle, driver and fuel. The Kok Tobe cable car and meals are separate, and we quote them before you set out.

Baqtaq Travel is not just a travel agency — it is a community of guides who speak English, Malay and Arabic. We put together memorable tours across Almaty and the Almaty region — a land where alpine lakes of the Tian Shan, Charyn Canyon, singing dunes and mountain meadows all lie within a day of the city.

These lands are rich in the history of the early Turkic peoples, and the sheer range of natural scenery surprises even seasoned travellers — as does the hearty, one-of-a-kind local cooking. We will show you the most beautiful places, and the customs and culture of the people who live here.

Frequently asked

How long does the tour take?

The full route with lunch takes a day. Short on time? We trim it to the key stops in three to four hours.

What is included in the route?

Kok Tobe with the cable car ride, Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral, the Green Bazaar and Arbat street. The order and the time at each stop are adjusted to you.

Are entry tickets included?

No. The Kok Tobe cable car is paid separately on site. We tell you the current price in advance so there are no surprises.

Is it suitable with children?

Yes — it is an easy, urban route. There is a small amusement park on Kok Tobe, and children usually enjoy the street performers on Arbat.

What if the weather is poor?

A viewpoint in thick fog is pointless, so on such a day we reorder the route: indoor stops first, and we move the cable car to a clear spell or another day.
